National Road Relays (12/10/2013)

Bob Lynch reports on the National Women's 4-Stage Road Relays - Sutton Park

"The Tipton Ladies got their best result in many years today with 14th place overall. We also fielded two full teams, which was pleasing to see. As usual, the standard was very high, with all the top clubs across the country being represented. Weather was a bit mixed, with rain at times but mostly light. At least the wind had dropped from the previous day.

The Tipton A team was Amie, Sarah, Claire and Lynne. Amie couldn't quite match her cracking run of last month but still did a good time - 16.11. Sarah was recovering from flu but managed 15.14 and handed over to Claire in 19th place. Then Claire pulled back 8 places and posted the fastest Tipton time of 15.04 (26th fastest of all runners). Finally, Lynne did the anchor leg against some of the fastest runners and only dropped 3 places to cross the line in 14th.

The B team produced some excellent times, with both Julie (16.23) and Sue (17.00) achieving course PBs. Sue was also a whole 37 seconds faster than last month and Hayley (16.07) managed the same trick - 38 seconds faster in fact. Lina ran courageously, clocking 21.01, taking the team across the line in 48th place.

Well done all eight runners!"

Report on the Men's 6 Stage Relay

Leg one, saw Ian Williams for the A team and Martin Williams for the B team going head to head, with Martin coming out on top in 21th place, with Ian 26th.  Leg two reversed the team order with Richard Kay pulling back 2 places to 24th setting up Ryan McLeod to tear up the field taking the team from 24th position to 6th, and in doing so set the fastest lap of the day with 16-55 – the only sub 17 minute clocking of the day. The third lap also saw Sale Harriers take the lead which they were to hold onto through to the finish.

Josh Lilley continued the climb up the ranks to 3rd position, with Mike Aspinall reaching a high point of 2nd place after leg 5. On the last leg it was down to Ben to keep a cool head, but with Belgrave’s Nick Goolab clocking the fourth fastest time of the day holding onto third for a great result for the day.

In the unofficial battle of the B teams Martin, Liam Roberts, Chris Fulleron, Steve Abrahams, Luke Vine and Tom Holden placed 39th – 6th B team.
