Midland XC Championships (29/01/2017)

Bob Lynch Reports,

This was our second year at Prestwold Hall - nice rolling course and OK for spectating once you got into the second field. Rather muddy and described by some as "claggy" - the mud just stuck to your shoes so you were carrying a good deal of weight around on your feet. About 6 degrees so warm by January XC standards but with a raw wind that cut across the otherwise flat countryside. Rain threatened but did not come until after the women's races.

At 12.05 we had the U17 and U20 women's races (ran together over 5k) and Tipton had two runners in each category. Not enough unfortunately to count for the team prizes. In the U17 Tipton fielded Beth and Tia who ran bravely in trying conditions to get 23rd and 37th place respectively. Beth was well into the upper half of the field and Tia had a superb finish to pull back a place virtually on the line. In the U20, we had two very team-spirited runners who both came back from Uni to race. Katie got 18th place and Dani 21st Well done them for making the effort!

A bit later at 13.25 came the Senior Women who ran 8k over two very large laps. We had six runners. Lynne Hill had bravely turned up ready to race even though she was clearly unwell but saw sense and did not start. The six who did run were Amie, Sally, Sue D, Penny, Sophie L and Jo A. Amie, who had finally shaken off her bug ran a cracking race and looked strong throughout, finishing in a pleasing 26th place (who cleaned the spikes Amie?). Not so very far behind were Sally and Sue D who had ding-dong of a battle all the way round with Sue leading Sally most of the way round but with Sally finally gaining the upper hand to finish in an excellent 30th place with Sue in 32nd but only 4s behind. Then Penny had a stormer of a race to end up final Tipton counter in 59th. Sophie came in 90th and Jo 135th. Overall, the SW team got a creditable 5th place. A good team effort I thought.
