West Midland Young Athletes XC (11/02/2019)

Sam Hale Reports,

It was a mud bath at Aldersley for the final fixture of the 2018/19 West Midlands Young Athletes Cross Country Course. The weather was mostly dry although very blustery but the conditions underfoot made for hard work. The Tipton Juniors were undeterred and it was a good turnout. We just about managed to hold onto our tent although the sides had to come down. It was a good day of racing and the team finished 7th of 20. Thank you to all those who turned out to race and to our excellent supporters who make such a difference.

First up were the under 17 women with a small then large lap.  Great to see the full team out, first back for Tipton in her last league race as a junior was Grace Slater with a strong run to finish 22nd. Bella Fantom had her best XC race of the season and came back smiling in 26th followed by Katie Bevan putting it all in 37th. Well done all team 6th.

Elliot Boden is our under 11 boys team at the moment. He has shown true commitment this season running every race as the sole Tipton runner. It was one large muddy lap and it was a really strong run from Elliot to finish 49th of 106 in a time of 5.59. (17 place improvement from his last race)
Well done Elliot. Team 15th

It was a small field of 44 runners for the Under 17 men’s race. We had a full team out over the gruelling 3 large laps. Dylan Wootton returning from injury was first back for Tipton in a very pleasing 16th. Lynden Hunt ran well for 24th and working hard Sunny Dhaliwal was 29th.
Great running and our best team result of the day – team 4th.

It was a good turnout for the under 11 girls for their charge around the big lap. Always strong Shaya Lewis was 26th (11place improvement) followed by Mia Fantom skating across the mud in 40th (22 place improvement). Jessica Warmer ran really well for 54th followed by Millie Hickman in 70th. Great running by Lily Marsh in her debut race to finish 76th followed by Scarlett Fletcher with a good run in 87th. Connie Chaney battled all the way to finish 95th and congratulations to Olivia Bowater, new to the club and running her first XC in trainers, 127th.
Fantastic running girls. Team 8th.

It was 2 large laps for the under 15 boys with Tom Bentley leading the way for Tipton, a fantastic finish saw him come in 21st.  Next was Ben Ferguson with a really strong run to finish 30th. It was a real battle for the last 2 Tipton places with Jack Cunningham 40th just taking it from Cameron Lomax 41st in the final straight.
Well done all. Team 5th (there were only 4 full teams out in this age group)

It was a reduced field for the under 13 girls with only 100 on the starting line. The race was completely dominated by Wolves and Bilston with 1,2,3 and 4.  Another fantastic run from Evie Tromans saw her storm home in 12th place and the best finishing position for Tipton of the day. Strong running from Sophie Brookes for 41st(  (17place improvement) closely followed by Grace Marnell with a great run in 47th. Mya Woodward looked good in 51st (7place improvement.) Well done to Macy O’Donoghue who broke the top 100 for the first time to finish 98th.
Good running girls. Team 7th

It was very windy for the penultimate race of the day. We had just 3 under 13 boys on the line and they all ran really well. Klay Fellows, really enjoying his running, was first back in 31st. It was a strong run from Tom Lucas 49th and Kavan Fletcher completed the team in 74th place.
Well done boys. Team 13th

The last race of the day, and by now I was holding the tent down, was the under 15 girls. It was a really strong start for Rosa Shadforth- Groucutt finishing 20th.  Jade Charlton after a difficult start battled her way through the field for 26th and a really strong run for Jessie Walker for 37th. Well done to Isobel Eagle running with a cold and finishing 57th
Team 8th.

It’s been a good season with some excellent running and athletes showing real commitment. Thank you to all who raced and their excellent parents and carers who turned out in all weathers. Let’s all have a think about how we fill the small gaps in the teams to make sure we do even better next year.
