Update 18/04/2016

Joel Green has been in touch and tells us that the photograph was taken after a race near Gateshead. This would appear to have been the Presto XC Races held at the Gateshead Bowl which the club used to attend "en masse". In checking AW it would appear that this took place on 28th November 1987.

In the Colts race John Brownhill finished 2nd to Mark Steinle from Tonbridge. Tipton were 1st team from Kendal, 2nd, and Darlington 3rd. Sadly these were the only results listed for the category.

Joel and Ben have also promised to dig out other materials from that era so we can scan it for the club's archives. Thank you Joel we look forward to seeing that in the next few weeks.

A look back at a group of young Tipton Harriers from years gone by.

The undated image from an unknown newspaper shows three lads from the club at the time. They were aged 13 years old and were year two pupils attending Ellowes Hall School, Lower Gornal.

From the left to right are : Ben Green, John Brownhill & Ian Harrison. They were featured after having run well in a XC race. We would like to know exactly which one.

It says that John was 2nd to an athlete from Tunbridge, Harrison was 25th & Green 47th.

Here is the associated caption.

We do know that John Brownhill was born in December 1974 and so this would give us an approximate starting date of December 1987 when he would have been just 13.

This also ties in as, on the rear of the cutting, there was a small advert with offering a "Christmas Trade In".

In looking at AW around that time it appears that they could have been a number of possibilities.

Favourite seems to be that on the 5th December 1987 when there was a big XC race in the Midlands called the "English Milk Cross Country Schools' Cup Final". This was staged at Waseley Hills High School, Rubery.

AW from the 10th December 1987 did feature a race report and some results but only listed the top 10 individuals for the "Boys Inters" and "Juniors". Sadly there was no trace of John, the other two athletes or their school in these two limited results lists.

Later in mid December there was the Staffordshire AAA's Championships at Burton. It is unlikely that this was the event from the information we already have.
