Throwback Thursday (08/06/2017)

This occasional series returns with a look at the 1982 Sandwell Marathon. We have come by a full set of the results which can be viewed below.

This race took place during the early years of the first running boom in the UK. The first London Marathon had taken place in 1981. Cities around the country were staging marathons and fun runs to encourage and tap into this boom. Sandwell was no exception. The event took place on Sunday 11th July.

Eddie Twohig won the race in 2h 26m 53s. Our own John Wagstaff was second. John was a prolific marathon runner in this era. One time Club Treasurer Keith Atkins was 5th, a "P Griffiths" was 6th - was this our current President?

Others that have been identified include Jeff Taylor, Steve Walton, the late Bryan Clifton, Keith Green and Sandra Lappage. See who else can you spot.

Jeff & Steve have helped us with the preliminary identifications.

What we would like to do is to build up a picture of the club's involvement with the race. Do you have any memories of the race or perhaps photographs/newspaper cuttings? Please let us know via This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Sadly the results do not carry the name of any club's or organisations. We would therefore like to try and identify which those finishers who were members of Tipton Harriers at the time.

If you can help please email both the position(s)/name(s) to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
