Phil Nicholls in Top Form at Loughborough International!

The traditional curtain raiser for the International track season and build up to the Beijing Olympics got underway at Loughborough University this weekend.  Tipton Harriers Phil Nicholls was called up to represent England at the 5000m event.  Phil the current UK 10,000m Champion from 2007 showed he is back in top shape after taking the lead 6 laps into the race when pacemaker dropped out and forced the pace from the front in windy conditions.  Phil had pre race favourite Tom Humprphries (the current National Cross Country Champion) to contend with who was going for the Olympic qualifying time.  Phil ran strong from the front though and crossed the line first in 13 min 58 sec.  Tom Russell (Scotland) 2nd in 14.03mins and Humphries 3rd in 14.13mins.
Phil said after the race "Im looking to get a race in Europe now and feel confident i can go sub 13.40".  This will get him close to the Olympic qualifying time for Beijing.
Phil will be defending his 10,000m title at Watford at UK Championships/ Olympic Trial on Sat June 15th.
Tipton Harriers Melinda Cooksey at the event also, finished 3rd in the women's 400m in 56 secs.
