Sports Medicine @ the QE

Have you ever had an injury or niggle that might have benefitted from something more than a visit to your GP? Well perhaps Bill Griffiths, our acting Chair, has had some information sent to him you might be interested in. He has recently been contacted by the QE Hospital in Birmingham who were keen to let the Harriers know about their specialist services for sports people. An outline of the scope and their services are listed below.

"Sport and Exercise Medicine is a discipline within medicine and physiotherapy which deals with problems relating to participation in all levels of exercise or competitive sport. The Sport and Exercise Medicine Service at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham is an NHS service for the diagnosis and treatment of injuries and includes:

• biomechanical assessment

• imaging (x-ray, ultrasound, MRI, CT and PET)

• gait assessment

• musculoskeletal ultrasound treatment

• bespoke rehabilitation programme using specialist equipment

• access to specialist orthopaedic surgeons

We treat a wide range of patients with differing levels of fitness. From routine procedures for patients with musculoskeletal injuries, to elite sportspeople who want to return to competitive sport, the team offer patient-centered care using the latest technology. The new hospital is the most modern and technologically advanced in the Midlands and offers the best environment for your care, with brand new gym facilities used in the rehabilitation of the UK's military patients.

For an appointment please speak to your GP for a referral. The service is listed on NHS Choose and Book. Once we have received a referral, we will contact you to arrange an appointment."
