National Road Relays (13/10/2012)

It was great that the ERRA were able to put on the Road Relays at a new venue at such short notice. Clumber Park was a fantastic place and beautiful to run round. The legs were perhaps a little shorter than ideal, but the two lap course certainly meant you could see a huge amount of the racing.

The intial cancellation did leave a few teams short of full strength as other arrangements were made. This included our men's team, which meant we had to ask Ben Gamble to race in the A team only 6 days after Jersey marathon. Ben, as he always does, stepped up to the plate and ran his heart out. His battered legs brought us in 36th place with 15.53 and within 5minutes of finshing he was sprinting away to get to work for 4pm and arrest the criminals of Staffordshire. Massive thanks are due to Ben for toeing the start line like he did.

Second leg was a flying Josh Liily who stormed up to 19th and a 14.57 clocking handing over to Ade Holliday. Ade had a cold all week and so was slightly down on where he might have been but still taking us to 12th and 15.20. Ian Mitchell maintained the place with 15.41 followed by Phil Nicholls who closed up on the leaders and into 9th with the team's fastest time of the day 14.55. This is Phil's first quality race since May after a disrupted summer, so a realy solid run. Dan Beier finished it off with 15.40 and claim 9th place. The team's high expectations meant we left feeling slightly disappointed, but plenty of time to rectify that in the coming season!

The B team were 40th and the Women were 28th. Men's & Women's Results.

Bob Lynch reports on the womens team,

Not the best of days for the Tipton Ladies team – some good runners missing, short (3.5k) laps, no hills to speak of and a bit of an obstacle course! The brave quartet of Julie Caddick, Sophie Lynch, Sue Davies and Kate Williams battled well to get 28th overall in a fairly small field. Clumber Park was pleasant enough and we thank the organisers for getting us a national championship in difficult circumstances.  Hopefully though, back to Sutton Park next time!
