Throwback Thursday (11/02/2016)

Phil Tranter has been delving deep into his "vaults" and has come up with a couple of images from the Uttoxeter XC Races in 1979.

This early season open cross country meeting was a firm favourite for the club for a number of years. It provided an "all in" event for every age group and a great start to the autumn/winter race programme. As Phil recalls:-

"This was one of the key races we always did before Xmas as Colts and Boys along with The Leicester Coritanian, Ampthill (which always clashed with the Mike Sully) and Worksop."

The first shows the start of the Boys race with a number of the young harriers going out hard.

They are believed to be, wearing the hoops, as follows:-

A - Pete Evans,

B - Kevin Stevenson

C - Neil Hardy

D - Lee Woolridge

E - Phil Tranter (Head Down)

The second shot shows the stream crossing. The Harriers in the shot (from the back) are 133 Phil Tranter, 129 Neil Hardy, & 125 Pete Evans.

Other "notables" in the shot are No. 6 Paul Dainty (Birchfield) younger brother of future Commonwealth Games medallist Gillian and No. 11 Adrian Passey (B&R) a future 3.34 1500 performer.

From our limited records for that year show that the races took place on 23rd September 1979. The races were sponsored by Bourne Sports and staged by Burton A.C. & East Staffordshire District Council. Don Shelley was the Public Relations Manager for Bourne Sports at the time.

Sadly we only have odd results for the Senior Men and a note that the Junior Women were 3rd team.

Tony Milvsorov was our first counter in the Senior Men's in 4th place. Other Harriers' placings were Rob Cytlau (5th), John Earlston (10th), Ron Bentley Jnr (11th), Doug Fownes (15th). Tipton were 2nd team.

In the Boys event that Phil competed in the winner was an A Rogers, listed as "Unattached", D Clarke of Birchfield was 2nd and S Collis "Unattached" was 3rd.

It is interesting to note that AW's results coverage was in the 20/10/1979 (Page 33) edition, nearly a month later, and did not provide any real depth. This was typical of the era.

From other sheets loaned to us by Wilf Morgan the Birchfield Harriers Archivist/Historian for the Senior Men's result another Tranter was noted, an "M Tranter" was was 115th.

The extra names this list provided were as follows:- 28th Bud Baldaro, 39th S Lowe; 76th Keith Atkins, Tipton Harriers, 115th Mick Tranter, 123rd Ron Bentley Snr, 201st R Bonehill.

Some famous names there that were the heart and soul of the club. Can anyone provide "first" names for those with just initials.

If anyone has more results sheets for this fixture, or their own positons etc. or photographs from their own collections then please send us them through with any information and anecdotes to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Finally Phil asks

"Does anyone know where Lee Woolridge is these days - I last saw him giving me a kicking (no change there!) at a cycling 10 mile time trial over ten years ago. Seems to have disappeared off face of the earth."
