Midland 7 & 5 XC Championships (20/11/2017)

Tony Phillips was over in his old stomping ground watching the 2017 Midland 7 in Nottinghamshire. He provides this report:-

"Tipton Harriers claimed their second Midland Cross Country Championship of the season when they claimed the Midland 7 miles Cross Country Championships at Bulwell Hall Park, Nottingham, with a fine team effort.

Over a new course, organised by hard working Notts. AC Chairman, Mick Robinson, who organises the Midland and Notional Cross Country Championships at Wollaton Park. The conditions were damp and chilly on a overcast autumn day. The parkland course of 7 miles included 3 laps over flat grassland and undulating stretches of land, with woodland paths, that tested the runners. The result was in doubt throughout the race, with Notts.AC and Tipton Harriers challenging for the team title. Tipton proving the winners at the end by the narrow margin of 57 to 62 points.

Tipton had a useful turnout of 15 runners with six to count for the team. Peter Crookes took the initiative on the first lap and led the field of 153 runners, from Jack Gray ( a non- scorer) and Alastair Watson of Notts.AC, the eventual winner, who caught Peter on lap 2,; he maintained third position for the rest of the race. Ian Williams was competitive in the early stages, staying in the leading positions for the reminder of the race to finish 6th.

Martin Williams kept in touch with the leading runners but a gap opened upon laps 2 and 3, but made progress towards the end to finish 7th. Richard White and Richard Carpenter were close together most of the race at the top end of the field, and finished 11th and 12th. Jon Carter was not far behind in 18th place to complete the counting six. Stephen Corbishley was next to finish , 19th, with Oz Ellis 24th after a good steady run.

Tipton runners straddled the field following at regular intervals with consistent running. Karl Welbourne 26th, Tom Holden 30th, and Gary Whitehouse 39th, after which a gap opened before Zabia Hassan closed in 61st, followed by Matt Whitehouse, 68th, and Clark Woodall 86th. Paul Dolan completed the course 137th.

It was a good performance by the Tipton runners turning out to support the team, that secured another Tipton win in the Midland Cross Country Championships.

The Women's 5 miles Championship was included in the programme and Sue Davies and Amy Hadley ran particularly good races to finish 4th and 5th, but Tipton did not complete a team.
