League Action (02/12/2018)

Saturday saw the Men & Women in action over the country in league competition.

The Men were at Warley Woods, one of Tipton's favourite venues, for race two in the four race series. The course included three large laps of the Woods which made for a splendid spectacle in dreary but dry conditions. The course had been laid out by the University of Birmingham with a little help from our own Bryan Mills and his race supplies!

Our squad was a little bit depleated in some areas but on day where the "cat was put amongst the pigeons" in the team race we did as well as we could expect.

Ian Williams was our first counter in 16th with "Junior" Louie Boot in 20th. Joe Smith was 23rd and Richard Carpenter 32nd. Our final two counters were Stephen Corbishley (38th) and Martin Williams (40th). This gave us a total of 169 points on the day and 4th place closely behind Cheltenham (162); Birmingham University (112) and dominant winners Birchfield (48).

Overall the team situation after two races gives an even more interesting picture with. Birchfield clear leaders with 113pts and then Loughborough (278); Birmingham (279) and Tipton (312) and Cheltenham (345). These five are over 200 points clear of Godiva in 6th. All to play for in the chase for 2nd place after Christmas.

In the "B" team contest we managed 4th place on the day and are 5th overall. Our "B" team scorers were Aiden O'Brien on his first outing for us in the League in 58th. Welcome Aiden. Jonny Carter in 69th; Aaron Brown 86th; Steve Brookes 101st; Ben Carrington 107th and Adam Guy 116th completed the six.

Phil Clamp (123rd) was our next man home with James Jefferson (152nd) & Dean Hill, fresh back from his debut marathon, in 154th. Zabbie Hassan was 200th and Adam Barnes 212nd. Karl Fletcher ran doggedly for 225th and Andy Acha was 239th. Myles Wilson was 253rd be cheered round by Geoff Taylor as "Phil". Heathcock & Fantom sparred in 257th & 258th. Loz ran all of the race hoping his spikes would hold together as the sole had detached from the upper even before they were on his feet! Karl Lewis was 266th, Rob Sedgley 277th; Andy Bentley, uncomfortable running on the slopes all the time, 279th and George Cunningham 281st. Life Member Alan Grice was also present but, due to an issue with his URN,  was not officially recorded in the race. There were an impressive 27 Tipton Harriers out on the course.

With the likes of Tom Holden, Peter Brookes; Stuart Hawkes, Ben Gamble & Tom Bains injured or unavailable we can hope that after the Christmas period we will be slightly stronger at the sharp end and others will also improve.

We extend thanks to those friends and family members who were around the park supporting the club and cheering our runners on.

Tom Holden & Geoff Taylor were our funnel officials to whom we pass on our thanks. Bryan Mills was at times behind his camera lens, aiding setting out the course and also helping Ray Morgan setting a record for getting the results on the League website by 4.00pm. Not content with that Bryan headed off to officiate in a Sports Hall meeting at Chelmsley Wood and was due to head North today to help at another race close to his heart. Chapeau Mr Mills.
