WMYA XC League (10/12/2018)

It was a busy weekend of racing for the Tipton Juniors with a number of athletes competing in their West Midlands Schools vests in the Inter-Counties fixture in Cheshire on Saturday.

Well done to Sophie Brookes 39th Minor Girl. Junior Girls, Rosa Shadforth-Groucutt 40th and Evie Tromans 52nd. Minor Boys Klay Fellows 33rd, Tom Lucas, 49th. Junior Boys Cameron Lomax 57th, and Ben Ferguson 52nd. Inter boys Dylan Wootton 40th and Sunny Dhaliwal 55th.

On Sunday we headed to Perry Park for Round 3 of the West Midland Young Athletes Cross Country League hosted by Birchfield Harriers. It’s a flat, fast, sprinters course. The ground was soft after the recent spate of wet days with some quite muddy sections. The weather was kind, dry although windy. Although we were missing some of our strong athletes, out due to illness or injury we saw some outstanding individual performances and as always great team spirit.

The day kicked off with a field of just 38 Under 17 Women. Only two runners for Tipton this time, a strong run from Katie Bevan saw her finish 28th, with an improvement of 6 places from her last race, followed by Tipton stalwart Bella Fantom in 34th. Team 9th.

Next up were the Under 11 Boys for a speedy mile lap with an uphill finish. Team Captain of the day Elliott Boden was our sole representative and he did us proud, after a flying start he finished 28th in a time of 6.40 (20 place improvement). Lots more to come from this young man. 121 ran.

Good to see a team of Under 17 Men on the start line. It was a fantastic race for Sunny Dhaliwal, giving it his all to finish 32nd, looking strong Lynden Hunt was 34th. Andrew Prole was 45th, Will Jones 46th and Stephen Hogan 49th after running a park run pb on Saturday to finish first male at Sandwell. Well done lads. Team 9th.

In the Under 11 Girls race Shaya Lewis was first Tipton with an impressive run 28th. Jessica Warmer worked hard for 61st, Gracie Hunt was 81st (6 places up), Connie Chaney 87th ( 19 place improvement) and Scarlett Fletcher completed the team 94th (5 places up).

Good running girls. Team 9th.

It was a great race between Tipton’s Ben Ferguson and Cameron Lomax in the Under 15 Boys. Ben held on to finish 28th with Cameron in 29th- both improving 10 places on their results at Warley Woods. Jack Cunningham returning to form was 35th and Tom Bentley full of cold was 38th. Well done all. Team 6th.

The Under 13 Girls race saw the best individual result of the day. Evie Tromans was full of running from the start and crossed the line in a really pleasing 8th place (18 places up). A very impressive run from Sophie Brookes 18th (23 places up), swift and eager Grace Marnell was 38th, returning to form Mya Woodward was 43rd (14 places up), Sarah Dudley was 48th, Sophie Banks was 51st. Welcome and congratulations to Simandeep Rai who finished in an incredible 56th place in her very first cross country race. Well done to Macy O’Donoghue 102nd with a cold (11 place improvement).

What a team – 5th of 20.

Really consistent running from the Under 13 Boys squad and brilliant to see a full team out. Klay Fellows was first Tipton looking strong to finish 20th, Tom Lucas was next in 28th. William Evans ran well for 70th, Kavan Fletcher was 80th (6 places up) and Ben Marsh was 5th scorer in 92nd in his brand new spikes. Team 9th.

It was a sadly depleted Under 15 Girls squad so get well soon girls. Just two Tipton Tuffies started and they both ran really well. Rosa Shadforth- Groucutt was in 5th/ 6th place for much of the race and finally finished in an impressive 15th place. Jessie Walker put it all in to finish well 34th.
Team 12th.

We are currently sitting in 9th position in the league. Full teams will make a massive distance so let’s hope for that for the next fixture. As always a big thank you to family and friends for bringing our juniors and giving the much welcome Tipton support.
