WMYA XC League (18/11/2019)

Sam Hale provides the following detailed report. Thank you Sam.

"This was actually the first league race of the season due to round 1 at Hatton being cancelled. For our home fixture we put on a very challenging course at the wonderful Warley Woods. A big team of committed volunteers turned up bright and early and the course was quickly up leaving time for breakfast in the café before the first athletes started to arrive.

Despite the heavy rain the course held up remarkably well and was nowhere near as muddy as expected. Lots of our athletes had raced on the previous day in their West Mids vests at the Schools Intercounty fixture at Lilleshall but there was no sign of tired legs.

It was great to see new athletes across the age groups proudly sporting their Tipton vests for their first XC outing. It’s a good venue for spectators with athletes in sight for much of the course.  The races began with a stampede across the meadow before the climb to the top of the hill, straight back down and up again and then through the woods , around the perimeter, down the hill and the gruelling uphill finish.  21 teams competed and Tipton made a great start to the season with the overall team finishing in 7th place. You were all Swift and Eager.

First up were our very strong under 17 women, great to see more than a full team. Bella Fantom was first home for Tipton in a very pleasing 20th place followed by Holly Graham running wellin her first XC race for the club in 27th, Katie Bevan giving it her all in 37th place and a welcome return to Issy Eagle 40th. Team 7th. Well done all.

Next were the under 11 boys, 105 starters but only one from Tipton. A massive well done to Jake Harding finishing strongly in 32nd place in his debut race.

It was brilliant to see so much green and white in the under 17 men’s race for the gruelling three big laps. Tom Bentley in his first season under 17 led the team home in 11th place followed by Dylan Wootton 17th, Sunny Dhaliwal 20th, great run for Michael Banks 35th, Lynden Hunt 36th, Alex Parker 42nd and newcomer Oliver Hayne-Chambers ( in road shoes) 59th. Great running lads, team 4th.

Our under 11 girls started like warriors from the off. It was a fantastic run from Mia fantom to finish 4th battling all the way round the big lap. All of the remaining members of the team were running XC for us for the first time and they did us proud with Layla Williams 12th, Millie Perry 71st, Harley Walters 86th and Hattie Boden 9 (in her brothers vest) 90th. Brilliant. Team 10th

Only two under 15 boys on the start line . Really strong running from Cameron Lomax 12th backed up by Ben Lucas 34th. Great running boys.

Next up were our under 13 girls. Good running from Sarah Dudley 27th, Shaya-Anais Lewis 48th, Sophie Brookes 70th, Jessica Warmer 78th, new girl Lily Packer 83rd, Scarlett Fletcher 96th, Connie Chaney 98th and Macey O’Donoghue 99th. Well done team, 9th.

Our under 13 boys were on fire , their intentions were clear from the off with both Tom and Klay leading for sections of the race. Fabulous running from Tom Lucas 2nd, Klay Fletcher 4th, Will Evans 11th, Elliot Boden 29th, Kavan Fletcher 62nd, Ben Marsh 74th, Mark Aston 91st and Thomas Hynes- Oughton 98th despite a couple of falls. Team 3rd, well done to you all.

Last up were our amazing under 15 girls and it was well worth the wait. Really strong team performances for a well deserved 3rd place. Jade Charlton was first back for Tipton in 10 , (despite falling  she managed to not lose a place.)  followed by Claire Parker 25th, Alex Westbury 26th, Rosa Shadforth-Grocutt 28th, Jessie Walker 34th, Evie Tromans 35th, Mya Woodward  44th, Sophie Banks 48th ,  Amelia Harrison in her debut race 49th and Grace Marnell 66th. Great team work girls.

So all in all a really good day. A very big thank you to all those who came and set up the course, to our very friendly team of marshalls, to Vicky, George and Karl for the refreshments, to our fantastic committed coaches and to our very supportive parents, carers and friends who helped to make it such a good event.

Next fixture 8th December 2019 Perry Park, Birmingham. Let’s get full teams out!"
