WMYA XC League (09/12/2019)

Sam Hale provides us with another in-depth race report from the second round of the League held at Perry Park on Sunday (08/12/2019). Thank you Sam.

"It was a wild and blustery day with some very heavy downpours so not easy race conditions for our juniors. The flattish course was very wet in parts and more than one athlete lost shoes in the mud. Our numbers were depleted this time due to illness so sadly not full teams out at all age groups but the athletes who were able to race really brought their game and we had some outstanding team and individual performances.

First up were our under 17 women. in a small field it was fantastic to see four Tipton vests on the start line.  All four runners improved on their positions at Warley. Bella Fantom 19th (20th in last race), Holly Graham 27th (up from 27th), Katie 25th (from 37th) and Issy Eagle 27th (from 40). Fantastic team effort all for 6th place.

Our sole under 11 was next and it was a fantastic race for Jake Harding finishing 24th of 103 with an improvement of 8 places from round 2. Well done Jake.

It was a very good day for our under 17 men with the team finishing in 3rd place. Tom Bentley was on fire to finish 6th (5 places up) great consistent running from Sunny Dhaliwal 22nd, Lynden Hunt 32nd and Michael Banks 37th. Commiserations to Dylan Wootton who was injured during the race.

Just 3 of our under 11 girls this time. They really fly around the big 1 mile lap. Mia Fantom was 11th with Layla Williams hot on her heels in 14th. Great to see Hattie Boden in 80th (10 places up.) Well done girls.

Lots of illness amongst our under 13 girls so get well soon. Sarah Dudley looking strong was 41st, followed by Shaya Lewis working hard for 69th and a spirited run from Lily Packer 76th (up 7 places). Sophie Brookes turned out but was unwell so DNF.

Our under 13 boys are incredible at the moment and despite being short of lads who would normally be scorers the team finished in second place. Fabulous running from Tom Lucas 3rd, Klay Fellows 4th, Will Evans 14th, Elliot Boden 32nd, Ben Marsh 67th (up 7 places) and Thomas Hynes-Oughton in 68th with an enormous improvement of 30 places.

Last up were our fabulous under 15 girls. The weather was shocking during the race. First back was birthday girl Jade Charlton 11th, followed by Alex Westbury looking like her old self 15th (9 place improvement), Jessie Walker looking really strong was 21st (13 places up), Rosa Shadforth-Groucutt was 35th, Evie Tromans 42nd, Sophie Banks 43rd (5 places up), Amelia Harrison (4 places up) and Simi Rai in her first race of the season was 62nd. Great team effort.

Thank you to all those who raced and to the parents, carers and friends for cheering them on."
