RIP Nick Jones (17/03/2020)

Tipton Harriers are saddened to learn of the death today of former member Nick Jones after battling cancer for the past year.  Nick joined us from Vale Royal in 1996 joining the University of Birmingham squad headed by Bud Baldaro.  The first recorded performance for Tipton was in the Basingstoke 'Klix 6' finishing 5th in 30:35, followed shortly afterwards clocking 48:51 in the Llandudno 10.  The roads were Nick's forte, racing frequently both in his native North-West and also in the Midlands.

He competed 5 times for Great Britain, 3 times at the World Half Marathon Championships (1999, 2000, 2001), at the Chiba Ekiden Relay in Japan and the Enschede Half Marathon, Holland.

Domestically he won team titles with Tipton in the National 12 stage relays in 1999, 2001 and 2011, and National Cross Country titles in 1999 and 2000.

Although the cancer he had was incurable, he carried on running, getting back to sub-20 minutes at his local Warrington parkrun.  Athletics Weekly interviewed him recently about his condition and current running. Click HERE to read the article.

Our thoughts are with his wife Caroline and their children Jasmine and Jordan.
