Andy Holden - Remembered 5 (21/01/2014)

On Sunday the Midland Masters Athletic Club held their annual Cross Country Championships at Wolverhampton.

Before the race Stuart Harris, respected Midlands official, invited those from Tipton Harriers present to join him along with Tom Morris, Secretary of the MMAC. Stuart then said a few words in memory of Andy. These are recorded here.

"The name Holden means so much to Tipton Harriers. First came Jack, a truly great British athlete, whose long career was blighted by the Second World War years.

Then later came red haired Andy, not related, who I first saw in a Lancashire vest winning the English Schools Senior Boys Cross-country title in 1967. Andy was then to prove himself at Birmingham University qualifying as a dentist and flowering to become a versatile international athlete.

A great father and family man, successful in his career, he was to become an outstanding club man for Tipton Harriers. He might possibly be the finest athlete who ever subscribed to the Midland Vets/Masters Association.

So I ask you, Tipton athletes, to accept our thoughts and sympathy on your great loss, and invite everyone to join in prolonged applause recognising the contributions of Andy Holden, a popular guy, fine athlete, great club man."

A prolonged period of warm applause followed before the race was sent on its way.
